"A valuable contribution to our knowledge of one of the West's more colorful historical figures.""Though Carson has been portrayed both as a great guide and an Indian guide -- as well as a brutal murderer who betrayed the Navajos -- the author of this book asks readers to further reconsider this historical figure."--David Steinberg, "Sunday Journal""A valuable contribution to our knowledge of one of the West's more colorful historical figures."-"Booklist,""Dunlay succeeds in presenting a man who spent much of his life and efforts solving the problems of both Native Americans and the white settlers, a man who can be criticized and lauded but who clearly contributed to what America has become."-"Publishers Weekly,""Almost every paragraph bristles with thoughtful analyses achieved by studying primary source materials and Carson's earlier biographers. . . . Dunlay achieves his goal of providing a balanced account of the life of Kit Carson, not the mythic frontier hero he was so often portrayed to be for more than a century, nor the brutal racist who perpetrated genocide on the Navajos and other Indians as he has been portrayed the last three decades."-"Western Historical Quarterly,"

Synopsis

Often portrayed by past historians as the greatest guide and Indian fighter in the West, Kit Carson (1809-68) has become in recent years a historical pariah - a brutal murderer who betrayed the Navajos, an unwitting dupe of American expansion, and a racist. Many historians now question both his reputation and his place in the pantheon of American heroes. In "Kit Carson and the Indians", Tom Dunlay urges us to reconsider Carson yet again. To Dunlay, Carson was simply a man of the nineteenth century whose racial views and actions were much like those of his contemporaries. Tom Dunlay (1944-2003) was a freelance writer and historian. He is the author of "Wolves for the Blue Soldiers: Indian Scouts" and "Auxiliaries with the United States Army, 1860-90" (Nebraska 1982).

Just about done reading this book which is much more than just about Christopher 'Kit' Carson but is a fully developed exploration into why we think about people like Kit in modern contexts and who he really was, how he grew up and the contemporary, not imposed mores (of current society) that influenced him. Dunlay also explores some of the modern terms we try to inject into our interpretation of the history of the West. Good read, highly recommended. He also clearly demonstrates differences between Carson and his military commander Brigadier General James Carleton and another contemporary, COL John M. Chivington the expedition commander against the Cheyennes and Arapahos at Sand Creek within a few days of Carson's defeat at the first Battle of Adobe Walls in 1864. Any academic would have done well to write this, but he does it in a very understandable way. J. C. Campbell, Independent Historical Investigator. I couldn't agree with the Limey Smokejumper more. This book is as compelling as Blood and Thunder, although different in its approach. A good companion book.

If you have already made up your mind about the relationship between settlers and Indians, then you will be pleased, or you will probably not accept the truth. If you believe all the hype from those that haven't read three words of history, this is not the book for you. It tells how it really was, from someone that was there, not someone reinventing history to get sympathy over a century later...

Entertaining and well researched. It was unnecessarily long, however, with exhaustive and repetitive treatment of specific themes in an apparent desire to counter balance other authors criticisms/condemnations of Kit Carson.

I found Kit Carson & the Indians a valuable addition after reading Blood and Thunder: The Epic Story of Kit Carson and the Conquest of the American West by Hampton Sides. Dunlay delves deeper into who Carson really was, and thrusts aside previous assertions as to his true agenda. It was a different time, priorities were raw and desperate, and people on all sides could be brutal, just like the landscape on which they all lived and fought whilst trying to carve out a country like no other.

This overcomes the many false things that have been written about him. I think this book is grand! I recommend it
